From a Fresh Cut to a Health Conversation: Man Cave Health Brings Cave Cuts to Hackensack Meridian Health’s Men’s Health Fair

For many men, talking about their health does not always come easily.

But put a barber chair in the room, bring in a few great barbers, and start with something familiar, and the conversation can change.

That was the idea behind Cave Cuts, a new Man Cave Health initiative that made its debut at the Hackensack Meridian Health Men’s Health Fair at Felician University. With volunteer barbers providing fresh cuts throughout the day, Cave Cuts created a relaxed, welcoming space where men could connect, talk, and, most importantly, start conversations about their health.

And the conversations were happening.

More than 150 men attended the event and took an important step toward taking control of their health, with prostate cancer screening and early detection at the center of the day.

Making Men's Health a Little Easier to Talk About

Man Cave Health believes that reaching men often means meeting them where they are and finding ways to make healthcare feel less intimidating and more approachable.

Cave Cuts brought that philosophy to life.

While men sat in the barber chair, conversations naturally moved beyond haircuts. Barbers and Man Cave Health volunteers had the opportunity to talk with men about the importance of knowing their numbers, understanding their risk factors and making time for regular screenings.

For prostate cancer in particular, early detection can make a meaningful difference. Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its earliest stages, which is why conversations about screening are so important. Hackensack Meridian Health's community outreach program specifically focuses on prostate cancer education, risk assessment and screening to help reach men earlier. (Hackensack Meridian Health)

More Than a Screening

The goal was never simply to get men through a screening line.

It was to create an environment where men felt comfortable asking questions, learning about their health and taking that first step.

The Hackensack Meridian Health Men's Health Fair brought together healthcare professionals, community partners and organizations committed to improving men's health. For Man Cave Health, the partnership was another opportunity to bring its mission into the community and help remove some of the barriers that can keep men from engaging with healthcare.

The result was a day that felt less like a doctor's appointment and more like a community gathering.

A fresh haircut. A conversation. A screening. Maybe even a question that a man had been putting off asking.

Sometimes that is where better health begins.

Meeting Men Where They Are

Man Cave Health's mission is simple: Powering Men's Health Through Sports. But the work extends beyond the sports field. It is about creating opportunities for men to engage with their health in places and environments that feel familiar, approachable and relevant. (Man Cave Health)

Cave Cuts is another way to do exactly that.

Because sometimes the easiest way to start a conversation about prostate cancer is not in a doctor's office.

Sometimes it starts in a barber chair.

Thank you to Hackensack Meridian Health, the volunteer barbers, healthcare professionals and everyone who helped make this event possible. Together, we are making it easier for men to talk about their health, get screened and take action early.

Know your risk. Know your numbers. Get screened.
