What Is a PSA Test?

A Simple Blood Test That Can Save Your Life

PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen, a protein made by the prostate. A simple blood test measures your PSA level, and a high number can be an early sign of prostate cancer, often before any symptoms appear.

When prostate cancer is caught early, the 5-year survival rate is over 99%. Man Cave Health offers free PSA screenings at community events. No appointment, no copay.

Guidelines

Who Should Get Tested?

  • Age 50

Men at average risk should talk with a doctor about PSA screening starting at age 50.

  • Age 45

African American men, and men whose father or brother was diagnosed before age 65, should start the conversation at 45.

  • Age 40

Men with more than one close relative diagnosed at a young age should start at 40.

These guidelines are based on American Cancer Society recommendations. Talk with your doctor about what's right for you.

What Happens After Your Test?

Normal result

Your PSA level is within a healthy range. Talk with your doctor about how often to re-screen.

Elevated result

A healthcare professional from our medical partner will reach out and connect you with a urologist. An elevated PSA doesn't always mean cancer.

More About Prostate Cancer

What is the prostate?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland below the bladder that produces seminal fluid. It tends to grow with age, which can affect urinary function.

Risk factors

Age, family history, and race are the primary risk factors. African American men face higher risk and more aggressive disease.

Symptoms, or the lack of them

Early-stage prostate cancer typically has no symptoms. That's what makes PSA screening so important.

Later-stage symptoms

Frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping, blood in urine or semen, or bone pain. If you're experiencing these, see a doctor promptly.
