There are a variety of procedures and techniques for various types of urological conditions. Nowadays, there are procedures which are minimally invasive and very successful. The best part about these kinds of procedures is that they generally result in successful outcomes. Additionally, they minimize treatment side effects.
It is becoming less taxing on the body to undergo treatments such as these, and they are becoming more widely available to more people thanks to these advances. For instance, minimally invasive surgeries provide patients with a better experience. One in which these procedures reduce blood loss and shorten hospital stays. They allow patients to recover more quickly and in less pain.
As mentioned earlier, doctors make use of these procedures for a variety of urological conditions. For example different types of urological cancers:
- Adrenal
- Bladder
- Kidney
- Prostate
- Testicular
- Transitional cell
- Ureteral
These techniques aren’t only available for cancer, however, doctors also make use of them to treat kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
What surgical techniques are available?
There are several types of minimally invasive techniques and surgeries:
- Endoscopic surgery: This procedure involves a number of minimally invasive techniques using an endoscope. An endoscope is a miniature camera. Essentially, doctors use endoscopic surgery to perform various other procedures. For example, cystoscopy and ureteroscopy. Doctors perform thousands of these procedures every year, they are very safe and minimally invasive.
- Laparoscopic surgery: This surgery makes small openings in the abdominal and pelvic cavity. This procedure avoids large incisions and involves procedures used to treat kidney and adrenal glands.
- Laser surgery: This tool is often used to treat kidney stones and BPH. These might include, for instance, GreenLight laser and Holmium laser treatments.
- Robotic surgery: This particular procedure is very effective to treat prostate, kidney, ureter and bladder conditions. Some institutions, for instance Mount Sinai Urology perform over 700 robotic procedures a year. It is a very effective form of surgery for prostate and kidney cancer.
